Privacy Policy

How we collect, use, protect, and share your information. We encrypt Social Security numbers and EINs, we don’t sell your data, and we don’t run third-party ad trackers.

1. Overview

This Privacy Policy explains how Hint Holdings, LLC, doing business as House (“House,” “we,” “us”), collects, uses, protects, and shares information when you use the House website and applications (the “Service”). It applies to household employers who use House and to household employees who receive a portal to view their own pay records. It is part of, and should be read together with, our Terms of Service.

The short version. We collect the information needed to calculate payroll and produce your records. We encrypt Social Security numbers and EINs. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not run third-party advertising trackers.

2. Information we collect

Information you provide. To create an account and run payroll, you provide information such as:

  • Account details — your name, email address, and sign-in information;
  • Household employer information — your Employer Identification Number (EIN), household address, and state;
  • Employee information you enter — your household employee’s name, contact details, Social Security number, wage rate, hours, paid time off, and withholding elections;
  • Payroll and record data — pay periods, amounts, expenses, and the documents the Service generates; and
  • Support communications — messages you send us.

For paid plans, your payment card details are collected and processed by our third-party payment processor, not stored by us.

Information collected automatically. When you use the Service we collect limited technical and usage data — such as your IP address, browser and device type, pages viewed, and timestamps — together with essential cookies used to keep you signed in and to keep the Service secure (see Section 6).

Information from third parties. If you sign in with a third-party provider (for example Google), we receive basic account information such as your name and email address to authenticate you.

3. How we use information

We use information to:

  • Provide the Service — calculate pay and taxes, generate pay stubs and year-end documents, and maintain your records;
  • Create and secure your account and authenticate the people you authorize;
  • Send transactional and service messages, security alerts, and tax-deadline reminders;
  • Provide customer support and respond to your requests;
  • Monitor, maintain, debug, and improve the Service, and protect against fraud, abuse, and security threats; and
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms.

We may use de-identified or aggregated information — which does not reasonably identify you or any individual — to operate and improve the Service.

4. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share information only as described here:

  • Service providers (subprocessors). We use vetted providers to run the Service on our behalf — for example cloud hosting and database services, email delivery, authentication/sign-in providers, and a payment processor for paid plans. They may process your information only to provide services to us and are bound by confidentiality and data-protection obligations.
  • Within your household. Information is shared among the authorized members of your household account according to their roles — for example, a household employee can view their own pay stubs and year-end documents through their portal.
  • Legal and safety. We may disclose information if required by law or legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of House, our users, or the public.
  • Business transfers. If House is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Policy.
  • With your direction or consent. We share information with others when you ask us to or otherwise consent.

Our sponsor that underwrites the free plan does not receive your account credentials, Social Security numbers or EIN, your employee’s personal information, or your individual payroll records.

5. A note about household employees

Household employers enter information about their employees to run payroll. If you are a household employee whose employer uses House, your employer is responsible for the information they enter about you and for their payroll decisions. House processes that information on the employer’s behalf to provide the Service and to give you a portal to view your own pay records. To correct information about your employment, contact your employer; you may also contact us at support@housepayroll.com and we will help route your request.

6. Cookies

We use only the cookies and similar technologies needed to operate the Service — for example, to keep you signed in, remember your session, and protect against fraud and abuse. We do not use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Because our cookies are essential to the Service, disabling them in your browser may prevent parts of the Service from working.

7. How we protect information

We take security seriously and use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards to protect your information. These include encrypting sensitive identifiers such as full Social Security numbers and EINs at rest, encrypting data in transit, isolating each household’s data with row-level access controls, and limiting internal access to sensitive data. Sensitive year-end documents are generated on demand rather than stored indefinitely. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Data retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. Because payroll data supports tax records that you may be legally required to keep, we may retain certain information for longer as required by law or for legitimate business purposes such as recordkeeping, dispute resolution, and enforcing our agreements. When information is no longer needed, we delete or de-identify it.

9. Your choices and rights

You can:

  • Access and update most of your information directly in the Service;
  • Request a copy or export of your data, or ask us to correct or delete it;
  • Close your account; and
  • Opt out of non-essential marketing emails using the unsubscribe link in those messages. Essential service, security, and tax-deadline notices continue while you have an account.

To make a request, email support@housepayroll.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting, and some information may be retained as described in Section 8.

10. U.S. state privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under state privacy laws — including in California (CCPA/CPRA), Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, and other states. These may include the right to know or access the personal information we hold about you, to correct or delete it, to obtain a portable copy, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and of certain targeted advertising and profiling.

We do not sell your personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, so there is no such activity to opt out of. To exercise any of your rights, email support@housepayroll.com. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights, and you may use an authorized agent where the law allows. If we deny a request, you may appeal by replying to our decision.

11. Children’s privacy

The Service is intended for adults acting as household employers and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 as users of the Service. If you believe a child has provided us information as a user, contact us at support@housepayroll.com and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

12. Where your information is processed

House is operated in the United States, and your information is processed and stored in the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, you understand that your information will be processed here, where data-protection laws may differ from those in your location.

13. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will provide reasonable notice — for example by posting the updated Policy with a new effective date or notifying you through the Service. Your continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised Policy.
